As publicity of fuming crime increases, news organizations are recommending car owners get lockable gas caps. Is this a viable solution to the growing problem?

Lockpickshop.com sells a universal gas cap key, said to "open almost any locked gas cap" for $7.95.

The legend:

A bungling thief tried to siphon diesel from a camper van but got a mouthful of raw sewage.

The would-be raider missed the fuel tank in the dark and put a tube into the van's septic tank by mistake.

And after sucking up the foul-smelling waste, he threw up on the spot and fled.

A Warrensburg man burned himself and is facing criminal charges after he used a lighter to check how his efforts to steal gasoline were going, causing a fire that destroyed a forklift, police said.
